
Michael
Doyle
Michael Doyle was a graduate of West Delaware High School in 1991. While in high school Michael placed 5th at 145lbs and was part of the State Tournament Championship Team and the State Dual Championship Team in 1991. Michael attended Wartburg College to continue his wrestling career under the direction of Head Coach, Jim Miller. While in college, Doyle was a 3-time Iowa Conference Champion, a 3-time Division III All-American, and a 2-time Academic All-American. Michael majored in Math Education and Mathematics, graduating in 1995.
In the Fall of 1995, Doyle took a teaching job at Independence High School as a Math teacher and assistant wrestling coach. Doyle was an assistant coach for four year under the direction of Bret Adams, before taking over the program as head coach in the fall of 1999. Since coming to Independence, the wrestling team has won the State Championship in 1996, won the State Dual Championship in 1997, and 3rd in the State tournament in 2005. Coach Doyle has guided the Mustangs to the State Dual Meet Tournament in 2002, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2014 placed 3rd, 2015 placed 5th, 2016 placed 5th. Doyle has been present for crowning 9 individual state champions and 51 state place winners in Independence history. Doyle was named Northeast Iowa District Coach of the year in 2006, 2007, and 2009. In 2009, Doyle was named Class 2A Coach of the Year by his peer at the State Wrestling Tournament. Michael resides north of Independence with his wife Jessie and three Children Allison, Matthew, and Natalie.

Keith
Donnelly
Keith Donnelly has served as an Assistant Varsity Wrestling Coach for the Independence Mustangs since 2004. Donnelly has helped guide the Mustangs to numerous top ten finishes at the State Tournament, most notably a 3rd place finish in 2005. During his tenure, he has also been a part of many State Dual Tournament teams including a 3rd place finish (2014), a 4th place finish (2020), and two 5th place finishes (2015 & 2016). Donnelly has been on staff for numerous WaMaC Conference team tournament titles and WaMaC Conference dual team championships. In both 2009 and 2020, Donnelly was a part of the Class 2A Coach of the Year wrestling coaching staff voted on by wrestling coaches at the State Wrestling Tournament. He is also actively involved on the Iowa/USA Wrestling Board of Directors, including six years of traveling across the country each summer as the Iowa/USA Wrestling Cadet Director.
A native of Independence, Iowa, Coach Donnelly was a Class of 2000 graduate from Independence High School. A wrestler himself in high school, Donnelly was part of Independence’s 1997 State Dual Championship Team. Following high school, Donnelly attended Iowa State University where he graduated with a double major in Agriculture Education and Agriculture Studies. Currently, Keith works in the Independence Community School District as the 3-6 grade Physical Education teacher at West Elementary. Donnelly resides in Independence with his wife Danielle, and children Callie, Christopher, and Curran.

Matthew Shannon went to Independence High School in Independence, IA. While in school, Shannon was a 4-time letter winner, 2-time Academic All-Conference award winner, 2007 WaMaC Conference Champion, and part of the 2005 Iowa State Dual team. Matt graduated from Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, with a BA in Biology and Secondary Education. Matt joined the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach at the beginning of the 2007 wrestling season. Shannon has been a part of the 2008, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, & 2020 Iowa State Duals teams and the Iowa Class 2A Coach of the Year staff in 2009 and 2020, which was voted on by members of the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association. While on the coaching staff, Shannon has been working on and maintaining a book containing the history of Independence Wrestling Teams. Currently, Matt resides in Independence with his wife Heidi and son Nelson. Matt teaches computer technology at the Independence Junior/Senior High School as well as owns and operates Shannon Wrestling and Timing, which he runs wrestling tournaments and times cross country and track and field events. Matt is also involved with coaching football at Independence.
