Independence Places 3rd at the 2014 IHSAA State Dual Tournament
Ninth-ranked Independence wins its way to the State Team Duals tournament by beating (three-peat) No. 5 West Delaware, 32-30, in the finals of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 2A regional dual at West Delaware. The Mustang’s earned their first State Duals appearance since 2009.
The #6 seed Mustang’s went on to finish third at the 2014 IHSAA State Dual Tournament.

#10 Independence over #5 West Delaware – 38-28
#10 ranked Independence Mustangs brings home the Buc-Del trophy for the first time by beating WaMac conference rival #5 ranked West Delaware in the Highway 20 Clash 38-28 at the new Jr/Sr High School in Independence, Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014.
This was the 53rd time these two teams have met, the first occurring in the 1955-1956 wrestling season. The Buc-Del trophy started in the 2009-2010 wrestling season.
Independence and West Delaware met at the Battle of Waterloo in December with Independence coming out on top 41-30. This was the second time Independence/West Delaware wrestled twice in a season.
The dual win wraps up Indee’s regular season with a 12-0 dual winning streak. The Mustangs go 24-1 for the season within the state of Iowa with a 24-5 overall season record.

Independence High School Wrestling competes in the Wamac Conference. The Wamac Conference consists of 16 teams split into East and West Divisions. Benton, Clear Creek, CPU, Independence, Marion, Vinton, Waterloo Columbus, and Williamsburg make up the West. Anamosa, Dewitt, Dyserville, Beckman, Maquoketa, Mt. Vernon, Solon, West Delaware, and Western Dubuque make up the East.
Independence has won the Conference Tournament in: 1976, 1989, 1996, 1999, 2006, 2009, 2010 and Conference Duals in: 1974, 1976, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.
Independence also competes in Class 2A at State. Independence has placed in the top 10 at state in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2010, and 2011. Winning the State Championship in 1996. Independence has also participated in State Duals in 1997, 2002, 2005, 2008, and 2009. Winning the State Championship in 1997.

The Mustangs are set to compete in one of the biggest national high school wrestling tournaments. The Clash XII will take place in Rochester, MN on January 3-4, 2014. The Clash is considered the premier dual meet tournament in the country for high school.
