Welcome to Independence Wrestling

Independence High School Wrestling competes in the Wamac Conference. The Wamac Conference consists of 16 teams split into East and West Divisions. Benton, Clear Creek, CPU, Independence, Marion, Vinton, Waterloo Columbus, and Williamsburg make up the West. Anamosa, Dewitt, Dyserville, Beckman, Maquoketa, Mt. Vernon, Solon, West Delaware, and Western Dubuque make up the East.

Independence has won the Conference Tournament in: 1976, 1989, 1996, 1999, 2006, 2009, 2010 and Conference Duals in: 1974, 1976, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Independence also competes in Class 2A at State. Independence has placed in the top 10 at state in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2010, and 2011. Winning the State Championship in 1996. Independence has also participated in State Duals in 1997, 2002, 2005, 2008, and 2009. Winning the State Championship in 1997.

Wrestling is open to all shapes and sizes as there are 14 Varsity weights ranging from 103 to 285. Increase your speed, strength, and endurance by becoming part of Independence wrestling. “Over Power the Competition”.


High School Wrestling Weight Class Change

The National High School Wrestling Association decided to change high school wrestling weigh classes in a meeting last school year.  The new weight classes are as follows: 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285.  These weight classes will be in effect for this coming high school wrestling season.  There are still 14 weight classes and as you can see some of the weights are the same.  Compare the above weight classes to the old weights below:

Previous classes 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215, 285.


Folkstyle Wrestling Rules Explained

How would you explain folkstyle wrestling rules to potential fans, parents, beginning wrestlers, or the media so they would easily understand? I believe all of us know many people who have become serious wrestling fans after they learned about our sport. That old adage “The More You Know, The More You Will Enjoy!” certainly applies here.
