Mike Doyle

Michael Doyle

Michael Doyle was a graduate of West Delaware High School. While in high school Michael placed 5th at 145lbs and was part of the State Tournament Championship team and the State Dual Championship Team in 1991. Michael attended Wartburg College to continue his wrestling career under the direction of Head Coach, Jim Miller. While in college, Doyle was a 3-time Iowa Conference Champion, a 3-time Division III All-American, and a 2-time Academic All-American. Michael majored in Math Education and Mathematics, graduating in 1995.

In the Fall of 1995, Doyle took his first teaching job at Independence High School as a Math teacher and assistant wrestling coach. Doyle was an assistant coach for four year before taking over the program as head coach in the fall of 1999. Since coming to Independence, the wrestling team has won the State Championship in 1996, won the State Dual Championship in 1997, placed 6th at the state tournament in 2001, and 3rd in the State tournament in 2005. Coach Doyle has guided the Mustangs to the State Dual Meet Tournament in 2002, 2005, 2008, and 2009. Doyle has been present for crowning seven individual state champions and 26 state place winners in Independence history. Doyle was named Northeast Iowa District Coach of the year in 2006, 2007, and 2009. In 2009, Doyle was named Class 2A Coach of the Year by his peer at the State Wrestling Tournament. Michael resides north of Independence with his wife Jessie and three Children Allison, Matthew, and Natalie.


Keith Donnelly

Keith Donnelly

Keith Donnelly was a graduate of Independence High School in 2000. Keith was a part of the State Dual Championship Team in 1997. After high school Donnelly attended Iowa State University where he graduated with a double major in Agriculture Education and Agriculture Studies. Currently, Keith is the Physical Education teacher grades 3-5 at West Elementary. Along with teaching, Keith is the assistant varsity wrestling coach and assistant varsity softball coach at the high school.


Mike Zimmerly

Mike Zimmerly

Mike Zimmerly graduated in 2005 from Independence High School. Mike was a 4-time varsity letter winner in wrestling, 2-time WaMac Conference Champ, 3-time state qualifier, finishing 4th his junior year and 1st his senior year. Mike’s senior year was capped off with a 44-0 record and a new school record for the most falls (34) in a season, and never gave up a single takedown throughout his senior campaign. Mike was a 1st team All-State Defensive tackle in football, a 4-time state qualifier in the shot put with a school record throw of 58’ 10”.

Mike attended the University of Northern Iowa and wrestled for the Panthers for 2 years, and is now attending Upper Iowa University majoring in English with a 5-12 teaching endorsement. Zimmerly was on the Independence Middle School coaching staff during the 2008-2009 season and was recently moved to an assistant position at the high school during the 2009-2010 season. Mike currently resides in Independence with his wife Marcy and two dogs, Chance and Toby.


Brent Lenox

Brent Lenox

Brent Lenox is a 2002 graduate of Oskaloosa High School in Oskaloosa, IA. In high school, Lenox placed 3rd at the state tournament his sophomore year at 130 lbs. Brent was also a part of the state dual team his senior year.

Brent attended Upper Iowa University and played baseball and majored in Plant Science were he earned his B.S. in Plant Science in 200_. Currently Brent is employed by Monsanto Company were he is a research assistant. Brent resides in Winthrop, IA were he lives with his wife, Tiffany.


Kalika Staker graduated from South Tama High School in 199_. After high school, Kalika attended Kirkwood Community College where he earned an Associates degree in Physical Therapy. Kalika serves as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for multiple sports, including the wrestling program at Independence and is also employed as a Physical Therapist Assistant for Millenium Therapy in Independence, IA. Kalika has studied sports strength and conditioning as a part of his continuing education requirements while he is currently pursuing his degree in Fitness Management/Exercise Science from Wartburg College.

Kalika and his wife Michelle have two children, Hope and Avery who are active in basketball and music. Hope and Avery also enjoy attending wrestling meets to cheer on the Mustangs. In addition to athletics, music, and cheering on the Mustangs, Hope and Avery are avid recruiters for the Indee Mat Club.


Jon Carey

Jon Carey

Jon Carey graduated in 1998 from Montini Catholic High School in Lombard, IL. There, Carey was a participant of several sports. His wrestling team placed third in the state duals twice, while Jon placed third individually at the state tournament his senior year. Carey went on to wrestle at Upper Iowa University for four years. He graduated with a teaching degree from Upper Iowa in 200_.

Jon taught in the South Winneshiek Community School District where he served as a resource teacher, athletic director, and middle school wrestling coach. Since 2006, Jon has taught 7th grade Social Studies at the Independence Middle School and has been involved in the wrestling program at different levels. Currently, Jon is coaching the Middle School wrestling team and the Indee Mat Club program. Jon resides in Independence with his wife Brooke daughter Claire and son Adam.


Garry Anderson

Garry Anderson

Garry Anderson was a graduate of East Buchanan High School. While in high school, Garry was a 4-time conference champion and placed 6th in the state at 112 lbs in 1992. Garry also participated in football while at EB. In 1993, he was a 2nd team All-District running back. The Buccaneers made the playoffs in 1990, 1992, and 1994. After high school Garry attended William Penn University and majored in Biology, Environmental Science, and Education.

In the fall of 1998 Garry took his first teaching job at Eddyville High School as a science teacher and middle school wrestling coach. Garry taught and coached at Eddyville for three years before moving to Independence. In 2002, Anderson was hired as the Middle School wrestling coach. Garry resides in Independence with his wife Andria and three children Natalee, Summer, and Benjamin.


Daniel Eschen

Daniel Eschen

Daniel Eschen was a 2008 graduate of Independence High School. Daniel was part of the state duals team his freshmen and senior years. Individually, Daniel placed 6th at USA Folkstyle nationals at 125 lbs his junior year and was a state qualifier his senior year at 119 lbs. Daniel attended Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo and is currently working for the City of Independence in the Water Department as an operator. Eschen is currently coaching at the Middle School and St. John wrestling program in Independence.


Matthew Shannon

Matthew Shannon

Matthew Shannon went to Independence High School in Independence, IA. While in school, Shannon was a 4-time letter winner, 2-time Academic all-conference award winner, 2007 WaMac Conference Champion, and part of the 2005 Iowa State Dual team.

Currently, Matt is a college student at Clarke College in Dubuque, IA. He is working on his BA in Biology and Secondary education endorsement. Matt joined the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach at the beginning of the 2007 wrestling season. Shannon has been a part of the 2008 and 2009 Iowa State Duals teams and Coach of the Year staff in 2009. While on the coaching staff, Shannon has been working on a book containing the history of the Independence Wrestling Teams. Matt resides on the Clarke College campus during college and lives in Independence during the summer months.
